Fantasy pencil drawing

waiting creatures of the night
Palomino Blackwing pencil in my sketchbook

I am on a fantasy kick. This drawing came straight out of my head (hmm...)

I started with the tree, just roaming around with my pencil. The crook of the neck of the tree behind it's face begged for a sitting fairy. I did her in jet black to make her the focal point. The dragon insisted on joining the party. He sort of crashed this small get together.  Not sure what is going on...waiting for something to happen...that is the thought I had as I drew it. The lights are lit and she is waiting for the gathering to commence. It's late at night and soon she will have company.

Disney sketching

The Boathouse
8"x 5" in my art journal
Watercolor and Ink

This is the boathouse at the resort I stayed in at Disney World. I stayed at the Riverside Port Orleans Resort and it was great. Loved the vibe of the place- Southern and Slow.  This view is from the restaurant. I parked myself there and drew this.

The boat that leaves here goes to Disney Springs and the French Quarter. It's very convenient to get to Disney Springs by boat and not the bus. A few days after I drew this, I joined an art group for 5 days of sketching and it was great fun!  I will talk more about that later.

2019 brings a new teaching class

Happy New Year! To start this year, I've been asked to teach a watercolor journaling class. I am looking forward to the get togethers and sharing work and techniques. I will post some class work here as it progresses.
Macrons
watercolor in my art journal

I started a new art journal recently and just did this small painting. I am fairly obsessed with the idea of making French Macrons. I will this 2019. I have purchased what I need and have read up on the technique. Now to start! In the meantime, I painted some.

Happy Painting!

patterns

berries on branches
gouache on paper

Just messing around tonight with my gouache paints. This is the last page of my 3x5 journal. I loved working in this size. My next journal is larger - 8x5. I usually use a Moleskine. But I've heard good things about Pentalic journal so I decided to give one a try.

falling in love with gouache

Italian countryside in Tuscany
gouache on paper
3.5" x 5" sketch journal

I love gouache! I decided to give it another go. I have a very old set of cheap student grade gouache and I hunted it down. I mean cheap! I think I paid $6.00 for a set of 16!  But they still worked. I am trying to remember why I originally bought them. (It will come to me at 3 am.) So I started playing. I used a reference photo from my recent Italy trip.  I love them! I love that they are opaque. That you can layer. That you can lift off. That you can paint impasto or like transparent watercolor.
That in some ways they are like acrylic/oil when you paint with less water. But that once dry, you can fiddle more if you want. I think I have found my favorite medium. I have painted in transparent watercolors for many years and I usually had a tube of white gouache around to add a highlight here and there, but that was my extent of how I used it.

So I ordered a new set today. I think the set I currently have is over 12 years old and several of the tubes are dried out. But I was even able to cut open the dry tubes and re hydrate them. My new set arrives Saturday. (Don't you LOVE Amazon??) The new set is a professional grade paint and I can't wait to see how much better gouache can be.I can't wait.

I wanted to show you my very cool palette. It's an old milk glass egg  holder I found on eBay. How cool is that? It it perfect for any water media. I've decided to dedicate it to my new gouache obsession.

Happy painting!
