Carolina Low Country

Heron in the marsh at Edisto Island
Pastel on paper

For several years my sister and I have taken trips to Edisto Island. We first learned of the Island as part of our family story. We have ancestors who settled on this remote island going back to the early 1600's. We first went there to research our history on the island. It is a beautiful island. Very remote. We started going there for the lovely beach and warm climate in October.  The reference photo of this painting one I took while out for a walk one day. This was taken on a side road, close to the ocean in the tidal marsh.  This is a repost- I was looking back at this blog and thought I would share this again.

Happy painting!

value study of Carolina Low Country

Carolina Low Country
Graphite on Paper
in my sketchbook
I am taking an online class over at Craftsy on landscapes. This is my homework. After watching several of the videos, we were instructed to do a value study. I chose this image as the Carolina Low Country is one of my favorite areas of the US. I never tire of images of tidal creeks, herons and sweet grass.

Very moody and dark...I used a very limited color palette. I hope this is the first of many. I put on Pandora and just painted. It's out of my head. I was just on Edisto Island last month for a time after my husband passed away and so I have visions of the low country in my head. It is a dark and dreary day and it fits my current mood of loss.
